Rose Quarter Underground: Looking at conditions from the bottom up

Fieldwork in the Rose Quarter Area

Crews will continue collecting soil samples throughout the Rose Quarter area through June. Sampling on and near I-5 will occur at nighttime and during the day on local streets. The work will ensure that designs are appropriate for local soil conditions and that construction activities are done safely.

What you will see and hear

Soil sampling will be conducted by heavy machinery: a truck-mounted rig for most locations (shown below) and a track-mounted rig for sites that are difficult to access. The work involves digging holes approximately 8 to 12 inches wide and up to 120 feet deep. They will be covered while not in use and backfilled within approximately two weeks.
